Dear Readers,
I write to you as I learn that nine people in Beit Shemesh have died from a direct missile impact. It is only day two of this war with Iran. I had to update the number after I first wrote it in my first draft. Terrifying.
The sun is shining, birds are chirping and the people of Israel are running into and out of the shelters across the country as we learn of more missile touch-downs, more people dying and more people injured.
I went through this during the “12-day war” as U.S. President Trump coined it. My home was entirely destroyed by a missile that was not intercepted on June 16th, 2025. I know what people are going through and what people’s lives are about to look like. My only hope is that government agencies in Israel have learned how to deal with these cases. Despite Israel has been in and out of regional conflicts and wars since its existence, the Mas Rehush, Israel’s Tax Authority, seemed to behave like it had never managed a situation like this before and needed to make up entirely new procedures. How embarrassing.
I just returned from the scene of the missile hit in Tel Aviv. It is truly catastrophic. I went into the building until the 3rd floor and ended up going down because my camera light was the only source of light for residents carrying down their tables and belongings in suitcases. I did not ever think my camera light would be used for such a thing, and I am glad I did not continue up to the top floor. My heart was breaking and I was having painful flashbacks.I am currently working on an article about the difficulties people are having with their properties, whether it be getting an appraiser’s attention, needing to provide three of the country’s cheapest quotes for reconstruction or the worst – being told incorrect and inconsistent information from tellers.
But worse than the bureaucratic nightmare is certainly going to be the funerals that people will have to conduct to honor those who have been killed by missile fire. It’s a problem I wish no one should ever have to face.
The world will eventually find itself in normalcy with the Iranian Regime’s top oppressors and funders of global terrorism taken down. And while Israel will take tongue lashings, its citizens will bury their family and tax authority representatives will be working on cases for the next decade, do not expect anyone to say thank you.
You absolutely must listen to the resident I interviewed who lost her home in the Saturday night attack. Raw. Real. Resilient and still thinking about the Jewish people at large. Truly extraordinary. The show will be out late Sunday night Israel time. — Shanna Fuld
