Hollow & Shattered

Leaving New York City is difficult every time, but this trip feels especially heavy. As I board my flight back to Israel, I return to a nation grieving over images of the released Israeli hostages, whose frail bodies and hollow expressions have left many of us heartbroken.

I found myself crying on the subway Saturday night while looking through the photos and videos. Seeing families reunited while witnessing the visible toll of captivity was almost impossible to process.

Knowing what the hostages have endured—and how many remain in Gaza—is difficult to comprehend. Being with family in New York has been comforting, but my home, work, and purpose are in Tel Aviv.

Journalism is my way of bearing witness, documenting history, and making complex stories accessible. I also remain committed to helping the Olim community thrive in Israel. My hope is that one day a member of the Tribe Tel Aviv community will serve in the Knesset and help represent immigrants at the highest levels of government.

It is time to return to that responsibility.

Hamas Releases Hostages

Three Israeli hostages emerged from Hamas captivity on Saturday after 16 months in Gaza. Their emaciated appearance shocked Israelis and drew international attention.

Before being handed over to the Red Cross, the men were forced to participate in a staged public ceremony in Gaza. They stood on a platform holding release certificates and delivering scripted remarks while visibly under duress.

The condition of the released Israeli hostages has intensified debate in Israel over the ceasefire agreement and the urgency of securing the release of those who remain captive.

In exchange, Israel released nearly 200 Palestinian prisoners, including individuals convicted of serious terror offenses.

Trump: U.S. Growing Impatient

Images of the released Israeli hostages prompted strong reactions from international leaders, including President Donald Trump.

Trump compared the men's appearance to Holocaust survivors and suggested that American patience with the ceasefire arrangement may be wearing thin. Prime Minister Netanyahu's office vowed that the scenes would not go unanswered, while Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar criticized what he described as insufficient international attention to Hamas's treatment of hostages.

Trump Proposes U.S. Control of Gaza

During a White House meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu on February 4, President Trump proposed that the United States take control of Gaza and oversee its redevelopment.

The proposal generated immediate international reactions. Hamas condemned the idea, while Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas rejected any plan involving the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza. Egypt and France also voiced opposition to external control of the territory.

Two Soldiers Killed in Crane Accident

Israel is mourning the deaths of Sgt. First Class (res.) Nadav Cohen, 21, and Staff Sgt. Nachman Refael Ben Ami, 20, after a military crane collapsed during severe weather conditions.

The crane, which supported surveillance equipment used during the war, toppled onto a position where soldiers were stationed. Eight additional soldiers were injured.

The IDF has launched an investigation into the incident and whether proper precautions were taken ahead of the storm.

Two Killed, Eight Injured in Shomron Attack

Two Israeli reservists were killed and eight others wounded after a Palestinian gunman attacked an army checkpoint in the northern West Bank.

The victims were identified as Sgt. Maj. Ofer Yung, 39, of Tel Aviv and Sgt. Maj. Avraham Tzvi Friedman, 43, of Ein HaNatziv, a father of six. The attacker was killed by Israeli forces at the scene.

Soldier Sentenced for Detainee Abuse

An IDF military court sentenced a reserve soldier to seven months in prison for abusing security detainees at the Teman Field detention facility.

The soldier was convicted of repeatedly striking handcuffed and blindfolded detainees. The court also reduced his rank to private, emphasizing that military personnel must operate within IDF regulations and values, even during wartime.
