Every night since October 7, I go to bed feeling fortunate. As I tuck myself in, I think about the hostages—many close to my age—who do not know whether it is day or night. I think about their families, especially their parents, who have endured unimaginable uncertainty.
Today, three young female hostages were returned to Israel. This Israeli hostage release allowed them to reunite with their mothers after months in captivity, creating one of the most emotional moments the country has witnessed since the war began.
Many across Israel are grateful to see hostages returning home through the ongoing Israeli hostage release efforts. At the same time, many are troubled by the price Israel is paying to secure their freedom: the release of Palestinian prisoners convicted of murdering Israeli civilians in terror attacks. Some are repeat offenders who will now walk free.
Among those speaking out is tech entrepreneur Hillel Fuld, who shared his heartbreak after learning that the man convicted of murdering his brother, Ari Fuld, in 2018 is among those being released. For many families, the joy of seeing hostages return is accompanied by renewed grief and painful memories.
Israelis continue to wrestle with the emotional complexity of bringing loved ones home while confronting the consequences of the agreements required to make those reunions possible.
