Hamas released four female IDF surveillance soldiers on Saturday as part of the ceasefire arrangement with Israel. The released Israeli hostages—Karina Ariev, Daniella Gilboa, Naama Levy, and Liri Albag—experienced freedom after 477 days in captivity. They were abducted during the October 7, 2023 attack on the Nahal Oz military base where they were stationed.
Before the released Israeli hostages were handed over to the Red Cross and returned to Israel, they were presented in what many viewed as a carefully orchestrated public spectacle in Gaza City. Hamas transformed a central square into an elaborate stage where masked Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad operatives escorted the women onto a raised platform.
The women wore olive-green uniforms resembling IDF attire and carried Hamas-provided gift bags. They waved, smiled, and gave thumbs-up gestures to crowds gathered below. Whether these actions reflected their true feelings is impossible to know.
Behind them was a banner declaring, "Zionism will not win" in multiple languages. Drones distributed candy to the crowd, adding to the celebratory atmosphere surrounding the event.
When these young women were taken into Gaza on October 7, they appeared bloodied and traumatized. Their public presentation before release appeared designed to project strength and control at a moment when Hamas sought to showcase its influence to both local and international audiences.
